ABOUT

How did we got started? Back in Spring 2017, when GoTriangle announced the new 2.5 billion dollar price tag (future dollars) for the Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit plan, transit advocates became alarmed. The cost had jumped from 1.8 billion and did not include millions in debt. As of January 2019, the total cost has now grown to 3.5 billion and the light rail is soaking up all our transit tax funds for other transit projects for years to come.

Who are we? We are transit advocates who want cost effective transit that will serve a wide range of people: students, Chapel Hill and Carrboro citizens commuting to work, seniors in cities and rural areas commuting to medical appointments and recreation, people who need public transit to go to work on weekends and evenings, and transit for residents who require higher frequencies to consider taking the bus. Chapel Hill is not practicing Transit Oriented Development because Chapel Transit is not serving the many apartments residences recently built on our major highways. Chapel Hill Transit is planning a Bus Rapid Transit project but there is a serious funding gap caused by the spending on light rail.

Affordable Transit for All is a network of leaders from Smart Transit Future, Orange County Voice, Chapel Hill Alliance for a Livable Town, and most recently Advocates of Residential Communities and Schools (ARCS). If your group would like to join our network send us a message.
